bi-weekly updates on the vietnamese music scene

RPT MCK

RPT MCK is a hip-hop and rap artist who started his career in the singer-songwriter and ballad world – a world that is deeply beloved by Vietnam (Some may say Vietnam is the land of ballads). Previous to his most recent album, "HVL", he had been on a hiatus of three years – time that had proved to be incredible value to an album that, in my personal opinion, could be considered his Magnus Opus. The album keeps his personal style of hip-hop and rap, but in true rebellion fashion of the nature in hip-hop, he experimented with rock, electronic, and importantly the sounds of the current underground; incorporating rhythms, grooves, sounds, arrangement styles that aren't prevalant in Vietnam's mainstream culture. What truly magnifies this album is his ability to incorporate his songwriter and ballad roots effortlessly into his works, but continues to push the envelope for the mainstream audience.

Without warning, RPT MCK and his team decided to debut the 30-track album in its entireity on a YouTube livestream. After each track streamed, the single track was then live on YouTube accompanied by incredibly visual work and music videos that illustrated the album's world. A simple, yet exciting return after a 3-year wait.

As MCK prepared to service the fans with live performances in Saigon, the government stepped in deeming lyrics of many of his songs to be against the law. Currently, MCK is re-recording 19 tracks to return to this truly progressive album.
